The BinaxNOW™ Malaria test detects Plasmodium antigens in EDTA whole blood from persons experiencing malaria symptoms. The test focusses on the histidine-rich protein II (HRPII) antigen unique to Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) and a pan-malarial antigen shared by all four malaria species capable of infecting humans: P. falciparum, P. vivax (P.v.), P. ovale (P.o.), and P. malariae (P.m.).

It is designed to help with the quick diagnosis of human malaria infections as well as the differentiation of Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) infections from less virulent malarial infections. Negative results must be confirmed using thin / thick smear microscopy.
